- Mrs. Pat Ibanga Akpabio, the daughter-in-law of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared her intention to contest the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District seat in Akwa Ibom State under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
- Her announcement sets the stage for an intriguing intra-family political rivalry as she challenges for the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Mrs. Akpabio, who has previously criticized her father-in-law’s performance in representing the district, revealed that her decision to enter the race is rooted in her desire to advocate for women and underserved communities across the 10 local government areas within the senatorial district.
“I believe in responsive and inclusive leadership. My mission is to ensure that the voices of women and marginalized communities in our region are heard and addressed,” Mrs. Akpabio stated.
She confirmed that she had officially purchased her nomination and expression of interest forms and presented them to her supporters at a gathering in her country home in Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area.
During the event, Mrs. Akpabio received a warm welcome from party officials and her supporters. “Today, I arrived in Ukana Ikot Ntuen to a reception filled with love, unity, hope, and the spirit of the people,” she said.
Expressing gratitude to those who have supported her campaign, she added, “My deepest gratitude goes to the State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Prince Uwemedimo Essien, the chapter chairmen, women leaders, youth leaders, State Exco, party faithfuls, supporters, and every son and daughter of Akwa Ibom North-West, who stood present as my nomination form for the Senate seat was officially handed over to me for the 2027 elections.”
Mrs. Akpabio also acknowledged her husband, Chief Ibanga Udo Akpabio II, whose unwavering support she described as instrumental to her political journey.
In her speech, she assured her constituents of her commitment to responsive leadership, stating, “I hear your cries, I feel your hopes, and I carry your dreams with responsibility and honour. I will not disappoint you.”
