The Federal Government has revealed its intention to gradually eliminate electricity subsidy payments beginning in 2027, as part of ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.
During a media session on Friday, Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, shared this plan while discussing the increasing debt burden within the electricity sector.
The minister emphasized that the removal of subsidies will be a gradual process to ensure a smooth transition, assuring Nigerians that they won’t lose the benefits they currently enjoy under the existing system.
Tegbe explained that this phase-out is designed to enhance the sustainability of the power sector and address the financial hurdles the industry faces.
He also reassured the public that there are no immediate plans to raise electricity tariffs, highlighting that any future reforms will be implemented thoughtfully to safeguard consumers.
This announcement is part of the government’s larger initiative to bolster the power sector and tackle its persistent financial issues.
