ABUJA – The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, has reportedly died in Abuja.
A source from within the commission shared with Daily Trust that Yusuf passed away at Nizamiya Hospital in Abuja on Friday, shortly after attending the Jummah prayer.
The source mentioned that Yusuf had fallen ill about five days prior while getting ready for a trip to Rwanda, suffering from complications related to diabetes.
It was also reported that Yusuf had collapsed multiple times, both in his office and during public events.
One notable incident occurred on March 13 during a press briefing for the launch of the APLS 13 Report, where he experienced difficulty breathing and had to remain seated while medical professionals at the event provided assistance before he was taken to the hospital.
The source revealed that Yusuf’s body was transported to Minna, Niger State, for burial on Friday evening, but did not provide additional details regarding the circumstances of his death.
Yusuf was appointed as the Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2025 and was later confirmed by the Senate.
He took the oath of office on December 3, 2025, alongside two other members of the NPC board. At the time of his swearing-in, the State House noted that he was 65 years old.
The NPC also confirmed that Yusuf officially began his role following the swearing-in ceremony in Abuja.
He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Additionally, he earned a doctorate in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, as stated by the State House.
His untimely passing comes less than a year after he took the helm of the commission, which plays a crucial role in managing population data and registering vital events in Nigeria.
