Bukola Saraki Rules Out 2027 Presidential Bid, Backs South Completing Eight-Year Tenure

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has said he will not seek the presidency in 2027, maintaining that the South should be allowed to complete its turn in office in line with the principle of power rotation.

Saraki made the remark while weighing in on the conversation around zoning and the North-South leadership arrangement. He said his stance is guided by fairness, political stability, and respect for the understanding that power should rotate between the regions in order to strengthen national unity.

“I’m not contesting in 2027 because I believe that it’s only fair that the South came in 2023 and let them finish in 2027. In 2031, there is no ambiguity for those of us that come from the North,” he said as quoted by Daily Post.

The former governor of Kwara State noted that keeping the rotational system intact would help prevent unnecessary disputes within the political space. He added that once the South concludes its expected eight-year tenure, the North should naturally take its turn.

“So when it comes to 2031, God sparing our lives and giving us good health, it’s North as opposed to anything that gives anybody an excuse that in 2031 those from the North want to contest, those from the South want to contest,” he stated.

Saraki’s comments come amid growing discussions within the Peoples Democratic Party and the wider political landscape over zoning, succession, and preparations for the 2027 general election. His declaration is expected to further shape the debate on how the opposition and other stakeholders approach the issue of power sharing in the years ahead.
