Florida Democratic Party Vice Chair Nancy Metayer Bowen Found Dead at Home

Nancy Metayer Bowen, a vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party and vice mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, was found dead at her home after police carried out a welfare check on Wednesday morning, according to city officials and the Associated Press.

Authorities said the case is being investigated as a domestic violence incident. Police took her husband, Stephen Bowen, into custody, and AP reported that he has been charged with premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. Officials also said there are no additional suspects and no wider threat to the community.

Metayer Bowen was first elected in 2020, reelected in 2024, and had recently begun a second one-year term as vice mayor. AP described her as the city’s first Black and Haitian American female commissioner, while the city and party have remembered her as a prominent public servant and community leader.

Reports also said she had been preparing to announce a run for Congress, adding to the shock surrounding her death. The investigation remains active.
