A political ally of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has claimed that former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has agreed to serve as his running mate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The claim was made by Ibrahim Abdulkarim during an interview on Trust TV, where he suggested that discussions between both political camps have advanced significantly.
According to Abdulkarim, there is already a mutual understanding between the two
“Yes, I can categorically tell you that they have agreed,” he said.
He further stated that supporters of both movements are aware of the development.
“We all know that. Both the Obidients and the Kwankwassiyya Movements are aware of the agreement,” he added.
If confirmed, the reported alliance could bring together two influential political blocs, the Obidient Movement, which gained nationwide traction during the last election cycle, and the Kwankwassiyya Movement, known for its strong base in northern Nigeria.
The development comes shortly after Kwankwaso’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the African Democratic Congress, a move that had already sparked speculation about possible political realignments ahead of 2027.
Political observers believe such a partnership, if formalised, could reshape the dynamics of the next general election by combining northern and southern voter bases under a single ticket.
However, there has been no official confirmation from either Obi or Kwankwaso as of the time of filing this report. Sources within both camps indicate that consultations are still ongoing, while party stakeholders continue to monitor developments closely.
The potential alliance, if realised, may emerge as one of the most significant political coalitions in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
- Do you think a Peter Obi–Kwankwaso ticket can challenge the dominance of major parties in 2027?
- Should political alliances like this be trusted, or are they just strategic moves for power?
